Huawei and Honor: SMS forwarding stops in the background
EMUI and Magic OS decide for every app whether it may start on its own, be started by another app, or keep running when you leave it — and by default they decide against. One screen with three switches fixes it for Resender.
App launch: manage manually
- Open Settings → Battery → App launch and find Resender.
- Turn its switch off: Resender is now managed manually.
- In the window that opens, turn on Auto-launch, Secondary launch and Run in background.
- Open Settings → Battery → App launch and find Resender.
- Switch Manage automatically off. The three manual switches appear.
- Turn on all three: Auto-launch (the app may start after a restart or when an SMS arrives), Secondary launch (the system may wake it), Run in background (it is not stopped when you leave it).
Older EMUI versions call the same thing Protected apps: tick Resender there. Then take Resender off Android's own battery optimisation — the app's main screen has a button that opens the list; choose Don't optimize for Resender.
How to check it worked
Lock the phone, wait a minute, and send it an SMS from another phone. The email should arrive within seconds. If it arrives only when you open the app, Manage automatically has probably switched itself back on after an update: set it to manual again.
What no app can do
Huawei's launch screens have no public interface. No app can read them, change them, or tell whether you have set them. Resender shows a red line when Android reports that it is being restricted and opens the right system screen for you — the switches are yours. Skip them, and messages arrive late or not at all while the app has done everything it is allowed to do.
Questions
The phone says Resender is managed automatically. Isn't that enough?
No. Managed automatically means the system decides when to stop the app, and it stops background apps freely. Switch it to manual and allow all three: Auto-launch, Secondary launch and Run in background.
My phone has no App launch screen.
Older EMUI versions call it Protected apps (Settings → Battery → Protected apps, or Phone Manager → Protected apps): tick Resender there. The effect is the same.
Do I also need Android's battery optimisation off?
Yes. Resender's main screen has a button that opens the system list: find Resender and choose Don't optimize. By hand: Settings → Apps → Apps → Resender → Battery → Battery optimization.
Why doesn't Resender switch these settings itself?
Huawei's launch manager has no public interface: no app can read or change it. The one Android setting an app could change with a single dialog needs a permission Google Play grants only to alarms, calling and similar categories, which a message forwarder is not.
Does this apply to Honor phones made after the split from Huawei?
Yes. Magic OS keeps the same App launch screen with the same three switches; only the path to it moves between versions.
